Bottom Painting with Salty Sunrise

Kelsey and Time sitting on Goose their boat

We’re excited to welcome a new ambassador to our marine community with this week’s featured video from Salty Sunrise!

Kelsey and Tim of Salty Sunrise sold everything they owned seven years ago, quit their jobs, and hit the road (or the water)! They are now traveling the world full time and sharing it on their YouTube channel. They are currently pulling up anchor and taking us along for the next chapter in their sailing journey aboard their boat, Goose, as they take on some refit projects.

After a busy two months away from the water, the couple returns to tackle a series of much-needed maintenance tasks, with one big focus — refreshing the bottom of their boat with fresh paint.

After reuniting with Goose, Kelsey and Tim find the boat in relatively good condition, despite some expected dirt and minor mold build-up. They waste no time in organizing their supplies and getting down to business. Having ordered supplies in advance, the couple was well-prepared, with an array of TotalBoat products at their disposal, including bottom paint, rollers, brushes, and more. The Spartan Multi-Season Antifouling Bottom Paint plays a key role in this episode, giving the boat a fresh, durable protective layer.

Tim and Kelsey explain their plan of action: scrape off barnacles, sand the hull, and apply the bottom paint. Armed with TotalBoat Spartan Bottom Paint, known for its high copper content and long-lasting protection, they are ready to get started. The beauty of the Spartan paint is that it’s designed to prevent marine growth, keeping the hull cleaner for longer, which is crucial for sailors like Tim and Kelsey who spend extensive time on the water.

Before applying the paint, Kelsey tackles another important task: cleaning off the stains from the boat’s hull. Using TotalBoat White Knight Stain Remover, Kelsey is amazed at how easily the stains disappear, leaving the hull looking clean and bright. “Pretty incredible how fast and well that stuff works,” she says, as she wipes the product on and watches the stains melt away.

Next comes the major part of the project — sanding down the old bottom paint. The couple rents a dustless sanding system, ensuring the process is as clean and efficient as possible. With their trusty TotalBoat jumpsuits on, they dive into the hard work. Sanding is a messy job, but with the right supplies, including protective gear and the correct sanding tools, they make significant progress, leaving the hull smooth and almost ready for fresh paint.

Before the painting begins, Tim tapes off the bottom and uses Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 to wipe down the sanded surface.

Finally, it’s time to apply the TotalBoat Spartan Bottom Paint. Tim takes care to mix the paint thoroughly, ensuring that the copper is evenly distributed throughout the can. Kelsey and Tim then begin applying the paint, transforming the hull with a sleek, protective black finish. The multi-season formula means they can trust the paint to hold up under tough conditions, ensuring fewer reapplications in the future.

The video wraps up with a sense of accomplishment. After two coats of bottom paint, Kelsey and Tim feel closer to getting Goose back in the water, knowing their hard work and TotalBoat products have set them up for smooth sailing ahead. This bottom-painting project was one of the most time-consuming tasks, but they completed the job with confidence. Stay tuned and subscribe to their channel for more updates as they continue their boat restoration journey!
