Below Deck: Fairing, Priming and Gelcoating

Brett and Jade Evans, of the YouTube Channel Expedition Evans, are serious about the appearance of their salvaged Beneteau 49, now that they’ve poured their soul into almost every inch of their restoration. The battered boat got a serious overhaul over the past year, and now that the couple is about to cast off on their sailing adventures around the world, it’s time to revisit a few places that need some more attention before they go. The battery boxes on their boat, Eva, might be well hidden under floorboards, but as they are about to replace their batteries with Lithium versions, they thought it was a great time to make sure the compartment that houses the power system was as tight and smooth and as pleasing as possible.

Jade takes on grinding down a sloppy glass job from her early lessons in fiberglassing and then fairs the whole area using thickened High Performance Epoxy.  Barrier coat is next with a nice coat of TotalProtect that will allow them to use Gelcoat over the epoxy and the epoxy paint.  It’s likely the sexiest battery box below decks and we trust that Jade and Brett know that’s the case as they came back to us to then build the most amazing epoxy marble countertops for their galley.  When your standards are as almost as high for your battery storage as they are for your countertops, you know these sailors will go the distance to do an unsavory job like fairing and glassing, even in hidden spots, to the best of their ability. And we would say they are pretty able all around. Tune in for the video of the week, below deck on Eva! Enjoy.
