How to Use TotalBoat Artist Resin
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Check that your supplies and workspace are clean and level. Wear gloves and an apron to protect your skin from exposure. Use a silicone mat or similar covering to protect your work area from spills. Ideal working conditions are 65-75°F with low humidity.
Step 2: Measure Accurately
Measure equal amounts of Resin (Part A with white cap) and Hardener (Part B with black cap) by volume in a mixing cup. An accurate 1:1 ratio is key to proper curing.
Step 3: Mix Thoroughly
Stir for at least 3 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup with the stir stick to ensure the resin and hardener blend evenly. Be sure to mix slowly to prevent any air bubbles. Once the mixture is clear and uniform, scrape into a second mixing cup and stir again, adding any tints or powders for color.
Step 4: Pour & Spread
You have an extended work time of about 30 minutes after mixing. Pour slowly to prevent bubbles and spread evenly with a spreader or stir stick. For coating, pour in the center, spread, and let it self-level. For molds, pour close to the surface in a slow, steady stream. If bubbles do appear, use a heat gun or torch in a sweeping motion to remove them.
Step 5: Wait & Cure
- Additional Coats: Wait 4 hours between layers, ensuring the surface is still tacky for best adhesion.
- Demolding: Small castings can be demolded in 24 hours.
- Light Use: After 48 hours.
- Full Cure: Reaches maximum cure strength in 3-5 days.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Can I mix Artist Resin by weight or volume?
Both! The mix ratio by volume is 1:1 (1 part A resin to 1 part B hardener) if you mix in a mixing cup. The mix ratio by weight is 1.11A:1B. -
Can I use dyes or pigments with Artist Resin?
Yes. Artist Resin can be tinted with epoxy-safe dyes, colorants, alcohol inks, mica powder pigments, or special effects additives. -
Can I thin Artist Resin?
No, thinning epoxy changes the mix ratio and will result in an improper cure. -
What is the ideal temperature range when working with this resin?
The ideal temperature is around 65°F – 75°F. Warm temperatures are key for a smooth cure and crystal-clear finish. -
How long is the working time?
Artist Resin has an extended working time of up to approximately 30 minutes, which is perfect for first-time resin users. However, it’s strongly recommended to mix only as much as you can apply in 20 minutes. -
What is the coverage of Artist Resin?
For every 8 oz. at 1/4" thickness, Artist Resin covers 57.7 square inches. -
How long will it take to cure?
TotalBoat Artist Resin is ready to demold in 24 hours, with a full-strength cure in 3-5 days at 77°F. -
Is Artist Resin UV-resistant?
Yes. The UV-resistant formula protects against yellowing and fading! For even better UV protection, durability, and clarity, overcoat cured Artist Resin with TotalBoat Halcyon Varnish. -
Can I place hot items on the cured surface?
Yes, but do not place items hotter than 122°F on the cured surface, or it will become distorted and discolored. This is standard practice for nearly all epoxies cured at room temperature. -
Is this epoxy safe for food contact?
Yes! Artist Resin's BPA-free formula makes it a safer choice for finished projects that may come into contact with food.
