The Art of Boatbuilding: Painting and Installing the Centerboard

Bob Emser is closing in on the final touches to his Haven 12 1/2 that he’s built from scratch in his shop and on his YouTube Channel, the Art of Boatbuilding. We got a chance to catch up with Bob and see his boat in person recently at the Wooden Boat Show. It’s as awesome as we imagined, and to see Bob standing proudly aside the boat was a real joy. Today Bob’s video covers finishing his centerboard with primer and then TotalBoat Wet Edge Topside Paint.

Bob chose to use topside paint and not a bottom paint because of the hardness of WetEdge which will not allow water to penetrate to the wood as a softer bottom paint would. Bob needs the centerboard to remain the same size to move up and down in the centerboard trunk, and swelling from water absorption would not facilitate easy use of the centerboard. Finishing off the trunk with some beautiful mahogany and more Lust Varnish, the glossy wood is a perfect centerpiece in the cockpit. Tune in and enjoy the final brush strokes going into this multi-year project that Bob undertook. We can’t wait to toast Bob as he casts off on his first sail. Enjoy
