SV Delos’ Dinghy Gets a Facelift!

Brian Trautman of YouTube Channel, Sailing SV Delos, just finished his first circumnavigation around the world on his cruising sailboat, Delos, while welcoming family and friends aboard as crew.  And, in today’s video of the week, we are following the adventures of SV Delos as they give their dingy, Maggie, a facelift with a fresh coat of TotalTread Non-Skid Deck Paint

Over 13 years ago, Brian traded the traditional corporate lifestyle for a life of sailing the world with his ever changing crew and growing family on his boat, Delos – a 53’ Amel Super Maramu 2000.  They’ve been documenting their journey on their YouTube channel as they have traveled 77,211 nautical miles, 536 days at sea, 46 countries and 6 continents!

But right before finishing their first circumnavigation around the world, Brian (“Capt. Breeyawn”), his wife Karin (“Kazza”), their daughter Sierra (“Nugget”) and the rest of the Delos crew were docked at Shelter Bay Marina in Panama.  This is where they were able to do some boat work on their dinghy, Maggie!  Maggie is a crossbreed between a traditional RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) and an aluminum boat.  She is entirely bare aluminum including her pontoons which are slightly pressurized.   After 10 years of owning Maggie, she has never let them down. The one slight downfall was how hot the bare aluminum gets in the sun. So hot that when they sit or touch her, they get instantly burned – so they knew it was finally time to give her a facelift!  They decided to go with our TotalTread Non-Skid Deck Paint.  This will reduce the heat that the dinghy absorbs while also giving them a non-slip surface.

The first steps will be to clean and sand the surface.   Brian removes the grip tape then wipes everything down with our Dewaxer & Surface Prep before applying the Aluminum Boat Etch Wash Cleaner and Conditioner. Once Maggie’s surface is cleaned and prepped, he applies two coats of our TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer to the aluminum.  Once that is dry, Brian goes back the next day to sand and apply the top coat!  And finally, Maggie has a new look and the crew doesn’t have to worry about getting burned every time they use her!

There are many more sailing adventures to come for this heartwarming family, so be sure to follow along by subscribing to their channel now.  And be sure to give this video a like and let them know below what you think about Maggie’s new sharp look! Thanks for watching!
