Meet Nike, the energetic solo sailor taking herself around the world, and most recently Panama, on her aluminum 37-foot sailboat. She’s been solo sailing aboard “KARL” since 2013 and is part of a group of traveling sailors who are sharing their travels and tribulations, too – all for YouTube. Nike spent a good year refitting Karl, mostly by herself, and now finds herself maintaining the boat in Panamanian anchorages and harbors.
Nike even pulled off an ill-advised bottom paint job, down to the barrier coat, between tides on a balmy, palm-tree-lined beach. (So far, it worked!) Today’s video finds her at anchor sanding and painting a new coat of TotalTread onto the worn-out deck on Karl. Us boaters know that any painting is best done in a controlled environment, so seeing Nike succeed on a hot day with a generator and little shade, is inspiring as many of us struggle through those last paint and varnish jobs needed before launching.
