Restoring a Cabin Sole with Lust Matte Varnish

Step inside the refit of Onne van der Wal’s Grand Banks 32, Snow Goose. Onne, a nautical photographer by profession, previously documented his amazing restoration of a tired, older Pearson 36, Snoek. Snow Goose is van der Wal’s latest undertaking and with the success of his last old boat restoration, which ended him with a show featured on PBS, he knew what to look for in a boat and in a repair that he could pull off mostly on his own. His talents are much broader than his camera skills, as he points out in this video where he shows off his varnishing skills.

After stripping off years of old, worn floor varnish using TotalStrip, he sands, and preps for 2 coats of Lust Gloss varnish. The deep amber color will give a boost of color to the grain in the parquet floor.  Top coating the gloss coats with a few coats of Lust in the Matte finish adds a perfect, low-luster sheen to the interior. Most boat interiors love this kind of matte finish and Lust gets right to the job, letting you build quick coats without sanding between them.  Step into Onne’s main salon and see for yourself how you can learn from Onne how to make your old boat (or house!) floors look new again. Enjoy today’s video of the week and be sure to subscribe to Onne’s new YouTube channel so you can catch the fun part as he puts the boat to its paces cruising New England.
