The Art of Boatbuilding: Painting Tread and Varnishing with Lust

Bob Emser’s Haven 12 1/2 is looking very shipshape, and every piece of wood or pail of paint that he adds moves him that much closer to the finish line. He’s artfully matched the Sand Beige Wet Edge he’s used with the Sand Beige TotalTread paint that he’s relying on to make wet decks a bit safer. The varnished walnut coamings are gleaming undercoats of Lust Varnish, and now he’s using High Performance Epoxy to scarf together more walnut planks to make covering boards and a beautiful toe rail that will really pull the aesthetic of this sweet little wooden boat together.

Bob has some clever techniques for patterning and scribing these important pieces of trim. Using sacrificial wood, he traces the patterns needed so he can then precisely fit the pieces. More Lust varnish is added to the new walnut pieces, and Bob gives a pro lesson in applying Lust varnish to raw wood, thinning his first coat to 50% so it soaks deep into the grain. Tune in to today’s video of the week and watch as Bob masterfully works on these important final details. Soon he’ll be rigging and setting sail and you know we can’t wait to see that launching! And be sure to give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to The Art Of Boatbuilding’s YouTube Channel for more awesome content from Bob’s midwestern shop.
